What can art and culture mean in a neighbourhood that rapidly changes.
A pilot community-art project commissioned by the municipality of Emmen. 2010-2012.
An exploration of the neighbourhood provided a wealth of ideas and stories. Three extensive community-art projects were realised in cooperation with local communities and urban art institutions. Hundreds of residents participated in them. During the project period the stories of some residents followed a kind of triple jump. They were distributed through a leporello flyer, after which phrases from the texts were placed on public walls. From them, young people's reactions were collected. Rapper DAB, a professional rapper from the district, made a rap song of the reactions ,which young rappers presented during the Emmermeerzingt culture event. The collected stories resulted this way in a conversation between generations in the public space. The question who owns public space, is also raised by this work.
Finally an exhibition of the project was created in the cities Center for the Arts (CBK ).
The exploration, the reactions of the young people on the wall texts and the rap cd were presented there, as well as the photo and video report of the three cultural projects: Emmermeerdanst, Emmermeerzingt and Culture at Teatime. A painted Mental Map of the area was brought in procession from the district to the CBK and shown there.
By this exposition the culture and identity of Emmermeer was brought to a broader audience.
